This copy is inscribed by Updike on the front free endpaper: "Handling this little book -- my first -- again, I remember (a) my difficulty in thinking of a title -- I tried ten or twenty (b) the way Harper tried to give me a small, stingier volume, with less leading between the lines. This copy is inscribed to Alan Clodd, whose Enitharmon Press republished Upward's books many decades later. Edward Upward was a legendary literateur in Cambridge, who greatly influenced W. H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood. "Journey To The Border," now largely forgotten, is a Kafkaesque / Freudian novel that enjoyed critical acclaim when it was published. Hardcover.
